EcoDay is a community celebration, bringing together the best of West Auckland’s community environmental groups, green businesses, ethical food vendors and local entertainers to create a fun, free and family-friendly day out.

With volunteers from Massey men’s shed

Will set up an activity tent event to show people what they can create with discarded materials, to demonstrate how solid waste can be transformed into something useful and educational.

Being a hands-on activity tent it will create opportunities for local communities to engage with, and participate in the creative arts.
It will provide opportunities for the community to participate by making a free craft, educational resource and/or science activity to demonstrate and promote the creative reuse of solid waste materials.
I will use pre-consumer waste so that children, adults, and the wider community are able to create resources for educational purposes and engage in sustainable practices.
There is a need to instill a positive environmental ethos in children from a young age; and this is a fun and creative way to encourage this.

We got FUNDING today
Waste Minimisation and Innovation
Application WMIF14150003 from Trash 2 Treasure charitable trust

$7,200.85 for the tent tc
The activity tent will be set up in the community at events with interest in hands-on activities with children and/or upcycling.
It is appealing and inviting to both adults and children who are interested by this unique work and come over to participate
and make something for free. Sharing creative ways of thinking about waste can and does impact on attitudes and
behaviour. This impact has been shown in previous projects by other educators making their own equipment, positive
feedback, stories and pictures of what others have made from waste. There is extensive interest and participation in this
work, demonstrating the hunger and need in the community. The role of early childhood is seen as very important in
influencing the acceptance of sustainable practice in the wider community.

How would the community benefit from your project?
This project increases community awareness of reusing solid waste. It demonstrates how it can be transformed into
something useful and educational in hands on activities and links communities together. The sharing of ideas and
knowledge on sustainability with others can and does influence their attitudes and behaviour; to nurture skills and attitudes
from an early age that promote the development of environmentally responsible adults. Another social benefit has been the
involvement of parents with their children, and in particular it has encouraged a rapport with men. The project is innovative
in utilizing solid waste materials for educational purposes, transforming it into learning experiences to benefit young
children's learning. Children explore and manipulate real world objects with their senses, developing self-confidence,
perseverance and promoting imaginative play. Familiar objects from home and the wider world presented in a different
context give children concrete experiences to explore and gain control of their bodies.
